Noob’s Top 10 Games Experienced in 2024

2024 was undeniably an incredible year for games. I don’t often tend to play new releases, so it is to my complete surprise that four games from the current year have made it to my top 10 list this year. Four! As primarily a backlog and PS Plus gamer, I often don’t even experience that many current games in a year, let alone enjoy them enough that they dominate the top 5 of my list.

While I haven’t managed to play as many games this year as I did in the previous years, it is safe to say I had some all timer experiences and it was a particular struggle ordering the lower end of the list, having to decide who to cut despite also giving me some fantastic memories.

Without further ado, here is the best of my 2024 gaming experiences.

I do my game tracking on GG App, you can see all 34 of the games I experienced in 2024 here.

10. Alan Wake 2

Developer: Remedy Entertainment

Release Date: 27 October 2023

Saga Anderson arrives to investigate ritualistic murders in a small town. Alan Wake pens a dark story to shape the reality around him. These two heroes are somehow connected. Can they become the heroes they need to be?

Number 10 on the list is a game that I didn’t play myself, but was one hell of an experience regardless. Watching a friend play the game and theory crafting along the way of this absolute trip of a journey was an especially fun time. Tying it into the first game – which I didn’t enjoy very much – and Control – which was only just bumped down from this very list – allowed us to go full corkboard and strings while taking in the atmosphere of this dingy, eerily beautiful world.

Ask me right now to summarise the story and I am not sure that I could off the top of my head, but it was a lot of fun along the way and now I think in spirals.

You can buy the game here.

9. Mass Effect 3/Legendary Edition

Developer: BioWare

Release Date: 14 May 2021

The Mass Effect™ Legendary Edition includes single-player base content and over 40 DLC from the highly acclaimed Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, and Mass Effect 3 games, including promo weapons, armors, and packs — remastered and optimized for 4K Ultra HD.

Finishing up the Mass Effect trilogy was a monumental moment. Legitimately the end of an era. Despite the fact that we only played Mass Effect 3 this year, I am including the others in here too as they are all within the Legendary Edition.

It took us years and now I finally understand why the ending is disliked on such a universal level. Thankfully, it did not dampen the memories of my years long playthrough of this epic series, with moments of the finale having me in actual tears on stream, something that I generally prefer to avoid.

You can see my fill playthroughs of Mass Effect 1, Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3 here.

8. The Talos Principle

Developer: Croteam

Release Date: 11 December 2014

The Talos Principle is a first-person puzzle game in the tradition of philosophical science fiction. Made by Croteam and written by Tom Jubert (FTL, The Swapper) and Jonas Kyratzes (The Sea Will Claim Everything).

This list has a couple of games that I didn’t have the most fun playing but shone so bright in other areas that I loved them anyway. The Talos Principle is the first of those. I made my way through the puzzles because I had to. What I was really there for was the story, delivered in the form of a computer archive. Every new area I made it to gave me the rush of finding new information. While I found the puzzles fun at first, they eventually became a block between me and my next lore fix.

I will admit, by the end I was following a guide for most of the puzzles – especially the stars – but the story was so interesting that despite this, I think this is my favourite first person puzzle game that I have played yet (unless Portal 2 co-op counts as its own game).

You can buy The Talos Principle here.

7. Frostpunk

Developer: 11 bit studios

Release Date: 24 April 2018

Frostpunk is the first society survival game. As the ruler of the last city on Earth, it is your duty to manage both its citizens and infrastructure. What decisions will you make to ensure your society’s survival? What will you do when pushed to breaking point? Who will you become in the process?

Frostpunk is the only game that made it onto this list from my 12 Days of Epic Games series, but it sure did earn its place. It was only the second game of the 12 and I immediatly broke my own rule that I was only trying out these games. I ended up finishing the campaign within the week.

I couldn’t get enough of the stress. I am not sure that I have played a game that balanced that line of helplessness but just scraping by so well in my entire life. I was sure I was going to fail, tens of times. Yet every time, through some miracle, we managed to pull through. It was not elegent, there was suffering, but I fully embodied my position of leader and did everything in my power to save my people.

What I am saying is, this is the most immersive, thrilling, coldest city builder that I have ever played. It was memorable, and it was pretty incredible.

You can see my experience with Frostpunk here.

6. Undertale

Developer: tobyfox

Release Date: 15 September 2015

UNDERTALE! The RPG game where you don’t have to destroy anyone.

Above I mentioned some games making it onto the list despite not having the most fun during the act of playing. Undertale is the second. I very nearly quit, but I am so pleased I persevered.

I had heard bits about Undertale but didn’t really know what to expect until I tried it out during 12 Days of Game Pass. Even then, I knew that I liked it, but I didn’t realise quite how much I was going to enjoy it until I finally jumped back in, 2 years later. Despite having some things spoiled, I really appreciate what this game is. It is humorous, clever, heartfelt, more difficult than I had hoped but I am not sure that is a problem for everyone.

Whether you find it iconic or cheesy, the Stay Determined messaging stayed with me for a while, making a real life effort to notice things that I too could stay determined about.

You can see my first look at Undertale here.

5. Mouthwashing

Developer: Wrong Organ

Release Date: 26 September 2024

The five crew members of the Tulpar are stranded in the empty reaches of space, shrouded in perpetual sunset. God is not watching.

Mouthwashing is the second and final game on the list that I watched rather than played. Once I watched it, I immediatly watched it again. And again. And I wasn’t sick of it even after watching 3 different playthroughs. I was glad that I didn’t play it myself because of certain gameplay sections, although part of me wishes they weren’t even there. Not just because I wouldn’t have enjoyed playing them, but because I think the game would have been better for it.

Overall though, I couldn’t get enough of the bleak, disturbing tones of this game. The claustrophobic setting and the off putting characters drew me in in the exact opposite way that I would have fled from them in real life. The game is an examination of a few themes that almost feel spoilery to mention, but hits that morbid mood itch in its own unique, worthwhile way.

You can buy Mouthwashing here.

4. Animal Well

Developer: Billy Basso

Release Date: 9 May 2024

Explore a dense, interconnected labyrinth, and unravel its many secrets. Collect items to manipulate your environment in surprising and meaningful ways. Encounter beautiful and unsettling creatures, as you attempt to survive what lurks in the dark. There is more than what you see.

Just like Undertale, I very nearly quit this game. But despite that, the impeccable uncanny atmosphere, the stunning colours and the freedom of puzzle solving kept me coming back for more. It took my eyes a short while to adjust, but once they did, this could well be the most stylish pixel art game I have ever played. The audio design also deserves a massive shout out for being both confidently understated yet enticingly effective.

Animal Well would never have worked as a stream game for me, but I desperately wish I could capture the absolutely chaotic energy during my journey of discovery. I perhaps got even more joy from stumbling into solutions than I did using my brain. Over and over again I would somehow make exactly the right mistake at exactly the right time to learn something that I would never have even thought of. It is masterful in design and the lack of handholding is somehow empowering.

This game can get spooky. My blood ran cold at least 3 times and I almost quit at least as many. Guides were my friend in these scenarios and I am glad that I pushed through to experience this gem that I would have passed on if it wasn’t available on PS Plus.

You can buy Animal Well here.

3. Life is Strange 2

Developer: DONTNOT Entertainment

Release Date: 26 September 2018

After a tragic incident, brothers Sean and Daniel Diaz run away from home. Fearing the police, and dealing with Daniel’s new telekinetic power, the boys head to Mexico. Each stop on their journey brings new friends and new challenges.

Life is Strange 2 was the final Life is Strange game that I had left to play. It may be an unpopular opinion, but I definitely saved the best till last.

This game was better than I could have hoped. It didn’t take me long to get invested in the brothers, but it was the ‘on the road’ element that really made this game tailored to me. It was full of emotions, highs and lows, wondering what might be next, and I connected with it more than I have any other LiS game to date.

I think it is a shame that so many people pass this one by. I understand that my experience isn’t the most common one, but if you enjoy the LiS format but skipped 2 because of low expectations, I would ask you to reconsider and give it a shot. It was definitely worth my time and may well be worth yours too.

You can play Episode 1 for free here.

2. 1000xRESIST

Developer: sunset visitor 斜陽過客

Release Date: 9 May 2024

1000xRESIST is a thrilling sci-fi adventure. The year is unknown, and a disease spread by an alien invasion keeps you underground. You are Watcher. You dutifully fulfil your purpose in serving the ALLMOTHER, until the day you discover a shocking secret that changes everything.

Oh. My. God. 1000xRESIST came out of nowhere and just decided to become part of my life. I have written extensively about both my first impressions (which took me a while to warm up) and my full experience with the game, so I won’t go into much detail here. What I will say is that this game is worth your time.

There is a reason that this game recieved so many nominations and awards. It tells a story that so many others could only hope to tell, so confidently that you don’t have any choice but to listen, admire, and continue to ponder long after playing. It is bold in its choices in a way that most AAA could not be, and if you can buy into the world they created – which you should – then you are guaranteed to go on a thoughtful and emotional journey, on both a personal and grand scale.

You can read my first impressions of 1000xRESIST here or my full review here.

1. Astro Bot

Developer: Team Asobi

Release Date: 6 September 2024

The PS5® mothership has been wrecked, leaving ASTRO and the bot crew scattered all over the galaxies. Time to ride your trusty Dual Speeder across more than 50 planets full of fun, danger and surprises. On your journey, make the most of ASTRO’s new powers and reunite with many iconic heroes from the PlayStation universe!

I think everyone knows by now that Astro Bot is a delight. This feels like an objective fact, and I can’t imagine anyone disputing it. I was slightly worried that it couldn’t live up to Astro’s Playroom (more on that below) but my worries were completely unfounded as the compact yet densely packed levels provide so much fun and so many surprises along the way that I could hardly contain myself.

The level of detail is just phenomenal. Every new level, just take a second and admire the physics of every single thing that you touch. I have never been in such kinetic and satisfying environments and this could only possibly have come to fruition from a team putting their heart and soul into their project. It is genuinely awe-inspiring, as well as wholesome and nostalgic as you make your way through the carefully crafted planets.

For the record, I have been championing Astro since Playroom and if you haven’t played it yet, I still think it is very worth it. It has a different set up to Astro Bot and it will make everytime you power on your PS5 feel like magic. Plus, it has one of my favourite video game songs ever (I am looking at you, GPU). I have yet to play the VR game but overall, this is the most joyful series that I have ever touched and Team Asobi have my trust for anything that they create in the future.

You can see my full playthrough of Astro Bot here.

Considering I have had so many high quality experiences with game in the past, it feels insane that there are still so many waiting for me. I have already selected a bunch of games I hope to play in 2025 as part of a backlog challenge and I look forward to seeing which games make it onto next years list.

Game Service Roundup – January 2023

Hey everyone! This is a round up of the games entering and leaving a variety of Game Services throughout the month, as well as free game giveaways that have been available throughout.

I like to try to keep track of what is coming and going in the world of game subscriptions but it is hard to find a singular place that does that, so I thought I would give it a go myself. I am going to trial it for a couple of months and see how it feels, whether I would like to add things and so on. Having it all in one place means that you can scroll to see if anything catches your eye, or you can Ctrl+F to whichever service it is that interests you.

Disclaimer: Sometimes dates aren’t announced and surprises are thrown in. I will do my best to make sure the information is as accurate as possible!

PlayStation Plus is Sony’s subscription service for PlayStation consoles. The service is split into three tiers. ‘Essential’, ‘Extra’ and ‘Premium’.

PS Plus Essential

‘PlayStation Plus Essential’ is the cheapest tier. This is the tier that is closest to what PS Plus used to be. When you are subscribed, you get access to playing games online and instant access to the PS Plus collection*. Additionally, Essential offers 3 monthly games**. If you claim them during that month then they are yours to play for as long as you have a PS Plus Essential subscription. If you drop your subscription then you will lose access, but they will still be on your account ready for the next time you subscribe. The monthly games get revealed on the final Wednesday of every month. They are then made available to add to your library and play on the first Tuesday, replacing the previous months games. The games offered occasionally vary by region.
* PS5 Only.
** Occasionally there will be more or less.

⚠ Due to the first Tuesday of the month falling on the 7th, the announcement wasn’t made until February 1st.
⚠ The PS Plus Collection ends in May. If you have any tier of PS Plus and a PS5 then make sure to add the games to your library before it’s too late. As far as I can see, they have taken all traces of the collection from the PlayStation website already so you may have to manually search for each game. Please do take a look because there are many worthwhile games on there.
Here is a list of the games that you need to add to your library before May if you haven’t already –

January PS Plus Essential Games | Available to claim from Tuesday 3rd January 2023 – Monday 6th February 2023
  • Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order (PS5/PS4)
  • Axiom Verge 2 (PS5/PS4)
  • Fallout 76 (PS4)

  • Evil Dead: The Game (PS5/PS4)
  • OlliOlliWorld (PS5/PS4)
  • Destiny 2: Beyond Light (PS5/PS4)
  • Mafia: The Definitive Edition (PS4)

PS Plus Extra/Premium

‘PlayStation Plus Extra’ and ‘PlayStation Plus Premium’ are the next two tiers of PS Plus above Essential. They include everything that you get with Essential plus other benefits.
PlayStation Plus Extra – Extra is the middle tier and allows you access to a catalogue of games, available to play on your console. New games get added to the service part way through each month and stay for an unknown amount of time. Games also leave regularly and it isn’t always communicated well so it is worth checking when you are deciding what to play.
PlayStation Plus Premium – Premium is the most expensive tier. As well as giving you access to the Extra catalogue, it also has it’s own benefits. There is an extended catalogue available as Premium also includes ‘Classics’ – a seperate collection of games from older generations. In addition, game trials and cloud streaming are some more benefits to this tier.
You can find a full breakdown of the benefits here.

Game Pass is Microsoft’s game subscription service. It is split into three different types. ‘PC’, ‘Console’, and ‘Ultimate’. I will currently only be covering ‘Game Pass for PC’.

Game Pass For PC

Game Pass for PC and for Console are seperate subscriptions but are very similar, they just work on different machines. They have their own slightly different catalogues but function the same. Game Pass grants you access to a library of games on your platform of choice. They are then available for you to play as for as long as you have a subscription or as long as they are on the service.
Game Pass Ultimate combines the two, allowing your account access to the service on both PC and Console, along with more perks including XBOX Live Gold.
You can find a full breakdown of the differences here.

A lot of people do not realise that included in an Amazon Prime subscription is access to Prime Gaming. Not only does this get you a free subscription to a streamer of your choice on Twitch, they also give away free monthly games and other perks. The difference with this service is that often the games are for different launchers. Some are for Amazon Games, but they also give codes for Epic Games, GOG and more. The best part? As far as I can tell – you get to continue playing the games you have claimed after your subscription has ended.
You can claim your games here.

⚠ Prime Games are being made available on a weekly basis from February 2nd rather than the usual bundle at the start of the month. They have renamed the tab on the website ‘Weekly Games’ so I presume this is their new model going forward.

Review – Life is Strange – PS4

Life is Strange is a 5 part Episodic game that introduces us to Max Caulfield – A budding photography student at the prestigious Blackwell Academy. Her day starts as a regular old day at lectures, then suddenly, something happens and she discovers that she can rewind time. After discovering her gift, Max rekindles her friendship with her childhood best friend Chloe and heads out into the weirdest week of her life. The story is very character driven, emotionally charged, mysterious and a joy to play.

Life Is Strange™_20160622232621

I love time travel stories. I’m obsessed with ‘The Butterfly Effect’ – the theory, not the movie (but that’s cool too). However, I often end up either confused by plot holes or unsatisfied by wasted potential. That was not the case with Life is Strange. I thoroughly enjoyed having the time travel ability, deciding when to apply it, seeing different outcomes, solving problems, changing decisions and experiencing the consequences. It was all done so much better than I imagined it could be in my head, with regards to continuity and actual play style.

Life Is Strange™_20160622231543.jpg

At its heart, this game had three main themes. Exploration, decision-making and problem solving. There were then the added flavours of mystery, whimsy, and even darkness with some fun moments and some very serious. The game is played in third person with you controlling Max. As you wander around, anything you can interact with is highlighted, including objects, people and animals. As you approach the game tells you which button to press to interact with said object/person/animal. You can look at things to hear Max’s thoughts, chat to people, inspect objects and there are occasional photo opportunities that go towards the trophies of the game. Gameplay is quite easy, if you are going too wrong then Max will sometimes give you a hint but generally the puzzles are easy enough. Like I said, exploration is one of the main factors of the game and if you don’t explore you will miss a lot so don’t be afraid to examine everything in the room before you do something. You can always rewind if you aren’t happy with what you did. There is enough variety in dialogue options to play Max as you want to play her and have your own experience.

Life Is Strange™_20160622231433.jpg

The Graphics aren’t great, but I don’t think they are meant to be. They are good but not Beyond: Two Souls level. That doesn’t mean to say there aren’t beautiful moments because there are many. The whole feel of the graphics fits in perfectly with the style of the game. It’s artsy, cute, quirky and beautiful in its own right. The attention to detail is insane. As you explore, read everything and you will just see how much effort has gone into making this a real living world. The posters on the walls, the graffiti, the texts, the journal. You will see what I mean as the game goes on, there are subtle and not so subtle changes. There is also plenty of subtle humor.  I love everything about the detail put into this game, I am in awe of anyone that has such a great imagination.

Life Is Strange™_20160622231939.jpg

As far as the story goes, some bits are predictable, some are shocking, some are awesome, some are funny, some are heart breaking. If you are a fan of Story based games then I can guarantee it will give you feels. The characters were so cliché but I loved that. It was really great that there was time to actually get to know the side characters. Going from everyone being strangers to looking forward to interacting with them is a great feeling. The only issues I have are 1. Sometimes it was noticeable that the same actor was voicing different parts and 2. Max’s voice could get a little bit annoying sometimes.

The story takes place over 5 days. Each episode is a new day give or take. Episode 4 blew me away and was my favourite of the 5. From beginning to end it had something to enjoy and it’s when the story really starts to get serious and everything starts coming together. In addition to just playing the story, if you look in the middle section of your journal there will be a bunch of sketches for every episode. These are the optional photos that I mentioned earlier. I didn’t notice until I was onto episode 2 but the sketches are a clue as to what the photo is going to be. It added a whole new angle of enjoyment to be on the lookout for what these photos could be. Some weren’t as expected and some made you work to get them. These photos are collectibles, they aren’t necessary and don’t affect the story however it’s probably the easiest platinum trophy you will ever get! Don’t worry if you do miss any because it’s very easy to go back when you have finished the game and mop them up.

Life Is Strange™_20160622232104.jpg

Do you like choice driven games? Do you like story driven games? Do you like character driven games? If yes then it is definitely worth playing. It is like the interactive movie genre games with a twist. It is creative, poetic, a lovely story of friendship with intriguing mysteries that will have you laughing and crying. Its hella good.

Life Is Strange™_20160622233630.jpg

When I write a review I like to write down my experience of the story and see how it differs to other peoples. Don’t hesitate to comment if you agree/disagree with something!

I had been suspicious of Mr. Jefferson a couple of times throughout the game but each time he completely changed my mind. One time was when Victoria tried to blackmail him and he completely shut her down. Another was when blaming him in the principles office, I thought it was weird that the option was even there so I rewound to see what that was all about. Nothing suspicious. Slimy SOB. Then in the 4th episode he seemed a bit weird again. Specifically at the party. I don’t know why but I got the creeps seeing him there, he looked out-of-place the second I saw him. When the end was revealed I wasn’t surprised because I sort of suspected it but I still thought it was a great way to end the episode. I was very pleased that I didn’t have to wait months between episodes, that would have sucked.

Life Is Strange™_20160622232422.jpg

I didn’t have a clue what to think of Nathan because he had to be in on it. I loved what they did though and it all made sense when it was revealed. I feel very sympathetic to him, poor kid had severe mental health problems that were ignored by his asshole family then he was used by an even bigger asshole pervert, only to realise what he had done and be killed by said asshole pervert. Now that’s traumatic. David gave me a weird feeling too, it was the opposite of Mr Jefferson. I kept believing that he only had the best intentions for him to then go and do something stupid like spy on his home and hit Chloe. Then there was the resentment of him replacing William who was the nicest person in existence. I was so pleased that my instincts with him turned out to be true, he turned out to be a great character, I’m quite fond of him. Everything in the dark room once he rescues Max was what I had been hoping for with his character. The option when he finds out that it was Jefferson that killed Chloe was POWERFUL.

I was really satisfied with my ending. Throughout the game I was sure that we were going to get a happy ending. I don’t know why I thought that, the last two games I completed had me sobbing (Red Dead Redemption and Beyond: Two Souls in case you were wondering). I was sure that we were going to find Rachel Amber and live happily ever after somehow. I hadn’t made the connection that the tornado was caused by the time travel and as soon as Warren said it in the diner it was a ‘Duh’ moment. There wasn’t much time to think between then and the end decision but when it came to it I was still surprised and had to pause the game to think it through. The right option was so obvious to me. In every single alternate timeline Chloe died. Every single one. She was never meant to live. I get the feeling that even if they survived the tornado she was going to get killed again soon. My thoughts are very ‘Final Destination’ but it makes sense. She was never meant to live. If you choose to sacrifice Arcadia Bay, every person that you saved in the tornado chapter would die. I can’t justify that from Max’s perspective or mine. Also, sacrificing Chloe isn’t just sacrificing Chloe. It’s putting time right. The game has clearly shown that you shouldn’t mess with time. From the nosebleeds to the passing out to the nightmare. The world literally cannot handle it. There is no timeline without the eco-disasters except the original one. Who’s to say that sacrificing Arcadia Bay is all that you are sacrificing? That tornado might never end, it might just tear through America, then the world. There might be more eco-disasters. There have been new ones every day and I dare bet that they would keep coming. I feel that the reason they didn’t expand on the sacrifice Arcadia Bay ending is because there isn’t anything else that they can add without making it obvious that it is the wrong choice. Look at what happened in the sacrifice Chloe epilogue. The chain of positive events that were originally meant to happen. I love the fact that it all came full circle and I don’t think there could be a more satisfying ending. As sad as it was it was necessary for the story to make sense. Don’t mess with time.

I KNEW it was going to come back to that butterfly. The whole theory of the ‘Butterfly Effect’ is that a hurricane could be caused by the flapping of a butterflies wings at the other side of the world. I love how they have taken that theory and used it, literally and metaphorically. I’m not a very symbolic or poetic person but I did appreciate the use of the butterflies and the tornado. Having the butterfly then land on Chloes coffin proved to me that I had made the right choice and that this was the way that it was supposed to be. That was their destiny all along. I really appreciate the fact that we couldn’t fix everything with time, and the more you try to change it the more trouble you cause. My only worry is that I have heard they are making a season 2 containing all new characters, I hope this doesn’t completely undermine my theory.

Just a couple of other things that I enjoyed – I really liked Warren for Max. I think they were a good match. They are both geeky, they like the same stuff, she thinks he’s cute, he completely trusts her, they are just completely on the same wave-length.

I was really sad when I realised that I was going to have to let William die again. That was almost as sad as the ending to me. That guy didn’t do one thing wrong. Except buying Chloe a car I guess.

Last one – I really liked the way they told the story, especially when it came to the alternate realities. I can’t think of a better way to catch us up than showing us photos of the changes. It spoke so much without even using words. The time that the photos changed back to being in the dark room my heart sank. It was chilling. I did not expect to end up back there. So well done.

Overall, this was my kind of game. Exploration and problem solving are some of my favourite parts of games. That along with time travel made it great. It was emotional and although I didn’t cry like I have before, there was a tear when the credits started rolling. This was probably because I was so confident that my choice was right. Either way, it was fun and a good game, even for people who don’t game. The only way I can think of to improve it would be to make it longer. Either more episodes or one long game. Then, at some of the photo-travel moments it could give you a couple of photos to choose from. That way you are truly creating your own story because whichever photo you choose changes different things. If this happened a few times then there would be loads of replay value to see where different combinations ultimately take you. Although maybe that is best saved for another game.

What were your thoughts? Were your suspicions right? What was your final choice? Did you cry?

PS Plus – June 2017

On my quest to play all sorts of different games, I have decided it would be fun to go back and play through my library of PS Plus games that I have never even looked at. My first month of PS Plus was January 2016, and back then I only used to claim the PS4 games. My PS3 is slow as anything and I couldn’t be bothered to turn it on and attempt to get on the PS Store each month. It was only recently that I realised that if you use your computer you can ‘purchase’ all the free games in a few seconds. When I was in Australia I literally guided my Mam through the PS store on my PS4 via video call, if only I knew. It’s great now that I realise that it’s easier, but it is also sad to see the games that I missed, all because I was clueless. I am (eventually) going to go through each month, from most to least recent, trying out these games and having my say about each one. I hope this can be helpful to someone!

P.S. I am only going to go through the PS4 games for now. I have got a backlog as big as.. well.. it’s big, so I will alternate my free games with my bought games and away we go!

PS4 – Killing Floor 2

Killing Floor 2_20170606193038

Killing Floor 2 is a horror themed, survival FPS developed by Tripwire Interactive. It is a sequel to Killing floor and, although there is a solo mode, is best played multiplayer. I loaded up this game not knowing what to expect but knowing that a lot of people seemed happy with it. As soon as I saw the mutated looking Golum I felt the dread creep in. I don’t do horror. I literally just had a scary zombie dream the previous night (I have them quite regularly but they aren’t usually scary (I have been watching IZombie recently if that helps (It probably doesn’t))) where I woke up and crapped my pants to find my poodles afro right in front of my face. Suffice to say I did not intend on playing a horror game today. I entered the tutorial and to my dismay – zombies. Or at least zombie type creatures. To my other dismay, that’s when I discovered it was a first person shooter. I don’t do those either. Well.. that’s a lie. I am trying with them. I recently tried to get into Paladins to help ease me in and although I’m not.. well.. I’m shit at it.. I don’t shy AS much away from FPS as I used to. Horror and FPS in the same game though? That is too much for me. Please, give me some credit, I did actually defeat the first wave. The game felt very much like a COD game I once tried (it came with my console) in movement and combat. I cleared the first wave, got to the ammo shop, then bailed 10 seconds before the second wave.

Let me tell you what I learned from my 10 minutes on this game. I imagine this is a blast if you have a group of friends, all with mics, teaming up to defeat monsters. There is plenty of customisation, from characters, to classes, to weapons. Enough to allow you and your team members to have their own identities and make a badass team. At least after you’ve unlocked them. Not only will the teamwork play an important part in this game, but also inventory management, as you have to manage your ammo, money and weight. Primarily, this is a wave survival game. I’m not even sure if it has a campaign, but what I do know for sure is that there is a huge audience for this type of game and if that’s you, you and your mates are getting it for free (I mean it is free if you’re already paying for online multiplayer, right?), you are definitely going to get hours of entertainment from it. Can’t be bad that, can it!

PS4 – Life is Strange

Life Is Strange™_20160622232621

Life is Strange is an interactive movie type episodic game, developed by Dontnod Entertainment. You take control of Maxine Caulfield, a photography student at the prestigious Blackwell Academy. It’s not long before something happens that changes everything, and our friend Max discovers that she can rewind time. Not just a high school drama, but a mystery game, this character and story driven game will take you on some highs and yet also to some pretty dark places. This is the second PS Plus game in as many months that I already own and have completed!

I do like this game. The art style is gorgeous, the atmosphere is fun to play in, the attention to detail is crazy and the story is haunting. I played the whole game in two sessions (I think it is approximately 10 hours) and for me, Episode 4 was my favourite. I actually wrote a full review on this blog if you would like to read it, but the overall consensus was to play the first episode which you can get free on the PS Store. If you like that then you will no doubt enjoy the rest of the game. Now that the whole game is free it is especially worth giving it a go. It might not be for you, or it might stay with you for a while. Although it is not my favourite game in the interactive movie category, it’s definitely worth playing, and it is many other peoples favourite. To top it off, there is a new game coming out in the future. Be it a sequel/prequel/spin-off, I do not know, but you might as well play the original while you have the chance!

PS4/Vita – Neon Chrome

Neon Chrome_20170606182929

Neon Chrome is a top down, arcade shooter developed by 10tins Ltd. Unfortunately, I am definitely not the target audience of these games so I can’t even tell you whether it is a good one or not. The story seems to be set in some sort of dystopia, where there is an evil dictator with a trust system. If you can’t be trusted, then you die. Your character enters a simulation chair and is working their way up each level of the building, towards the boss, to overthrow him. At least that’s what I THINK is going on. From my 10 minute experience, I managed to get to level two, die twice, upgrade a character, collect money and loot, and shoot things. You use your left analogue to move and your right analogue to aim, which in itself is a system that I do not have the coordination for and would never get used to. I suppose if you like these kind of games then you can make up your own mind but it is 100% not for me. Just a side-note, this game has no platinum, just in-case that is important to you!

PS4/Vita – Spy Chameleon

Spy Chameleon_20170606182943

Spy Chameleon is a colourful, fast paced puzzle game developed by Unfinished Pixel. You are a chameleon, sneaking your way through rooms without getting caught. It is a typical modern arcade game and it is actually pretty fun. You can choose to just complete the level or you can go for the extra objectives including grabbing collectibles and speed running. It’s a great time waster and to be honest, it is exactly the type of game I would like on my phone for those boring times that I am waiting for the bus. For this reason I guess it would be great for Vita players specifically. There isn’t any substance or story behind the game other than completing the objectives but you wouldn’t expect it from such game. Having said that, I have only got to level 15 so someone else could know better. I don’t think it would take too long to complete the game, but it has got a lot of replayability in not only the additional bonuses and difficulties, but the trophies. If you enjoy the game then it seems like a very reasonable platinum. I for one am going to try for it.. eventually.

PS3 – Abyss Odyssey

As I mentioned above, I don’t have time to play the PS3 games at the moment so I will update as I do, but for now I will include a summary for everyone’s benefit. Abyss Odyssey appears to be an indie, side scrolling, action-adventure platformer, developed by ACE Team. Again, this doesn’t seem like the type of game I would like but I will give it the benefit of the doubt once I start going through my PS3 games.

PS3 – WRC 5

WRC stands for World Rally Championship, making this a racing game! It was developed by Kylotonn and released in 2015. Since then we have had WRC 6 in 2016 and are expecting WRC 7 in.. when?! You guessed it.. 2017. Guess what? I don’t really like racing games either. I know what you are thinking, why am I even doing this when I don’t seem to like anything. Well.. I am trying to keep an open mind and I still hope to be proven wrong when I do get around to trying it.

Summary – So, it is my 18th month of being a PS Plus member, and only my first month of trying all of the games. Well.. the PS4 games at least. I am pleased that I did it, not only because I found one game I can sink time into when I eventually get the time, and not only can I tick some of these games off my backlog, but because I can already feel that this is going to give me 1. A broader knowledge and experience of games 2. A more refined, tried and tested list of games that I do/do not like and 3. More confidence to jump into new games in the future. Having said that, I must remember to give the games a fair chance and not just give up after getting killed *ahem Neon Chrome ahem* and not to prejudge a game just because ‘I don’t like that genre’. Ultimately, I am looking forward to jumping into the rest of my line-up, even if I am probably going to end up with a thousand started but not finished games. As for this month of PS Plus, a huge variety, I don’t think anyone can complain!

Note to Playstation/Sony – Please make a semi OCD girl happy and allow us to sort our trophy lists. All I want to do is re-order them. Instead of having the most recent trophy first, allow a custom order. Or at least a percentage order. 5% – 40% – 39% – 18% – 25% – 78% – 100% – 56%. It’s so messy and all over the place, it makes me feel uneasy, and I’m sure I am not the only one. A tiny feature change would make a lot of days, just FYI.

So.. What did everyone think of June’s Line-Up? Love It? Hate It? Stand out games for you? Requests for the future?
